Choosing the Right Study Table Design (and Why Art Makes It Better)

As an interior designer, one of the most common pieces I get asked to design is the study table. It’s functional, often compact, and yet has the potential to completely shape the vibe of a room. Let me walk you through a recent study table design example to show how thoughtful design (and a bit of art) can elevate a simple piece of furniture.

The Design Dilemma

Last year, I designed a custom study table for a client in Life Republic. My original design was a two-tone combination: a sleek grey surface paired with a warm wooden-texture laminate. The grey subtly echoed the room’s wall tone, while the wood added a natural warmth and visual interest.

But my client was insistent—he wanted the entire study table design in wooden laminate. While I had my reservations, I did create a new render to reflect this.

Seeing both versions side by side made me reflect on how much materials affect not just aesthetics, but also the perception of the entire space.

So Which Design Works Better?

Honestly, both versions have their charm. The two-tone design feels modern, composed, and slightly more refined, especially if you’re styling for contrast. The all-wood version, on the other hand, gives off a consistent, warm vibe—more traditional and cozy.

I’d love to know what you think. (And no, don’t let the lighting or time of day in the renders bias your choice! 😄)

Why Art Matters—Even in a Functional Space

Let’s step back from materials for a moment.

Now imagine this: What if I had placed just the table in front of a blank wall?

It would’ve looked… empty. Lifeless. Incomplete.

That’s why I always complement my renders with fine art drawing posters or tasteful wall elements—even when the hero of the shot is just a piece of furniture. Art doesn’t just decorate a space; it completes it. It adds emotion, context, and sometimes even a bit of storytelling.

In this project, a few framed sketches and paintings above the study area elevated the entire composition. What was once “just a table” now looked like part of a lived-in, loved, and thoughtfully designed room.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re choosing between two finishes for a table or styling a wall behind it, the decisions you make affect more than just how a space looks—they affect how it feels.

Interior design isn’t just about placing objects in a room. It’s about curating moments. If you’re wondering whether hiring an interior designer is going to come at a huge cost, check out this article where I have written in detail about how interior designers usually charge in India – their different fee models.

And sometimes, it’s that simple painting above your desk that turns your study corner into your favorite spot in the house.
