Designing with Purpose: A Mandir Project Beyond Compensation

Designing a space initially managed by another designer can often present unique challenges. Last year, I had the opportunity of designing mandir area at my contractor’s request, as their previous designer could no longer continue. This situation was particularly tricky because I wasn’t directly connected with the client — my communication was exclusively through the contractor.

The Challenges

Although this was an unpaid project, I took it on to help maintain its momentum and protect the reputations of the parties involved. The mandir, while a small component, presented its own set of design dilemmas. For example, there was a window directly behind the mandir, and I wasn’t sure whether the client wanted to close it off or keep it open for natural light.

First Design Proposal

I initially proposed a design with an arch-shaped backdrop, paired with a carefully selected wallpaper to complement the space.

Addition to Design

Midway, a new requirement emerged: the client wanted a partition to offer privacy, as the mandir was positioned right in front of the entrance. I suggested a foldable partition that could serve as a door, giving flexibility without compromising the room’s aesthetic.

2nd Design Proposal

In another design concept, I kept the window open to allow natural light to flow in. This design was more intricate, incorporating shelves on both sides of the mandir for additional moortis and frames. I enclosed the mandir with a jaali arch in the front, creating an elegant, sacred space.

This final design was chosen for execution, and though I wasn’t able to see it in its completed form, I was pleased with the direction it was headed.

Sometimes, as a designer, you take on projects purely out of goodwill, knowing that your efforts contribute to a greater whole. Despite the challenges, experiences like this are part of what makes design both a rewarding and unpredictable profession.
