When designing a living room, the TV unit often becomes the visual anchor of the space. But what happens when you want to add functionality and elegance with a perfect crockery unit or display cabinet without overwhelming the layout?
This was the exact design challenge I recently tackled for one of my clients. They wanted a display-cum-crockery unit that wouldn’t clash with the existing TV unit but would instead enhance the overall aesthetic of the room.
After evaluating their needs and the existing décor, I proposed three distinct design options—each with its own character, material palette, and visual impact. If you’re also struggling to find that balance between form and function in your living space, read on. One of these options might just be the inspiration you need.
Designing Around an Existing TV Unit
When you’re introducing a crockery or display cabinet in a space that already has a defined focal point—like a TV unit—it’s important to:
-
Maintain visual harmony without overcrowding
-
Use contrast or symmetry smartly
-
Choose materials that complement or thoughtfully contrast the existing elements
-
Factor in lighting to highlight objects and create ambience
Each of the options I proposed takes these principles into account while addressing both aesthetic appeal and functional storage.
Option 1: Subtle Sophistication with Mehendi-Toned Laminate & Glass
In this option, the crockery unit features a ply frame construction with glass shutters, finished in a mehendi-colored laminate. This subtle, earthy green hue pairs beautifully with most natural finishes and doesn’t compete with the TV unit visually.
Why I Like This:
-
Glass shutters keep the unit feeling light and open.
-
Mehendi green adds a soft contrast to wood tones without overwhelming the palette.
-
It’s a minimal yet graceful design that suits clients who prefer understated elegance.
This is ideal for homeowners who want something quietly classy—not too bold, but far from boring.
Option 2: Statement-Making with Extended Display & Side Lighting
For those who like a bit of drama and opulence, this design makes a bolder statement. The unit features side extensions to display showpieces, creating a built-in look that frames the TV unit beautifully. The cabinets are finished in a rich brown tone and include profile lighting inside to illuminate the crockery and artifacts.
Why I Like This:
-
Adds a sense of symmetry and balance by extending horizontally or vertically.
-
Built-in lighting elevates the look and draws attention to curated objects.
-
The brown cabinetry creates continuity if the TV unit is also wood-toned.
Perfect for someone who wants their living room to feel layered and curated, with a luxe, boutique vibe.
Option 3: Crisp Contrast with White Glass Shutters
Here, the idea was to offer contrast. Since the existing TV unit is brown, I proposed a white-toned cabinet with glass shutters and integrated lighting. This introduces brightness and freshness to the space, acting almost like a visual breather amidst darker furniture.
Why I Like This:
-
The white color instantly lifts the room and creates modern contrast.
-
Glass adds transparency while still concealing clutter.
-
Lighting inside the cabinet adds a soft glow in the evenings.
This one is for clients who lean toward a clean, contemporary aesthetic, and aren’t afraid of using contrast to their advantage.
So, Which One Would I Choose?
If I had to pick just one—it would honestly depend on the overall styling of the rest of the home. But purely based on timeless appeal and versatility, Option 1 is a strong contender. The mehendi-toned glass cabinet strikes the right balance between modern and earthy, understated and functional. It’s a design that works in various color schemes and remains stylish across trends.
That said, Option 2 wins in terms of luxury and visual weight—especially in larger living rooms. And Option 3 would be my go-to for compact spaces or homes that already lean minimalist.
Final Thoughts
Designing around an existing TV unit doesn’t mean you have to compromise. Whether you prefer a subtle blend, a dramatic frame, or a modern contrast—there’s always a smart way to integrate crockery and display units into your living space.
If you’re considering revamping your living room or adding a feature cabinet, I’d love to help you tailor the design to your taste and needs.
Which of these options do you love the most?
